Art Therapy

Art therapy is a mental health service that offers an expressive and embodied approach to emotional and psychological well-being. It combines art-making with talk therapy to support insight, healing, and self-understanding—especially when words alone feel limiting. While creative activities like painting or crafting can be soothing on their own, art therapy goes deeper. When guided by a trained art therapist, the creative process becomes a powerful tool for emotional processing, reflection, and nervous system regulation.

 What makes art therapy different?

Art therapy works by engaging both the mind and body. Visual expression is processed in a different area of the brain than verbal language, allowing access to emotions, memories, and insights that may be difficult to articulate. The focus is not on the final art product, but on the process and what it reveals. Through art therapy, you can rediscover your creativity as a source of healing and empowerment.

Who can benefit from art therapy?

Elspeth specializes in working with deeply feeling children and anxious youth who may experience intense emotions, physical symptoms such as stomach aches or headaches, or pressure to be the “good kid” or “perfect student.” These children often struggle to put their feelings into words or appear to be coping well on the outside while feeling overwhelmed internally. Elspeth creates a space where kids can be kids, using art and play as comforting, familiar tools to express themselves, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies.

What Happens in an Art Therapy Session?

Children are drawn to work through change and stress by colouring, scribbling, role-playing, dancing and singing. We use art materials like coloured pencils, felt markers, crayons, watercolour paint and plasticine and toys like dolls, puppets, nature items and blocks to explore the themes coming up in your child's life.
